Wilson Wong Wilson Wong is an early career researcher working towards robust and efficient abstractions of natural language text for smart information use and the enablement of the Semantic Web. His areas of interest include ontology learning, computational linguistics, and text mining.

Wilson is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre of Software Practice in the University of Western Australia (UWA), focusing on the application of text mining techniques in the e-Health domain. He is also a lecturer (currently on study leave) at the Technical University of Malaysia Malacca (UTeM), where he has taught courses on Artificial Intelligence and Web Technologies.

Wilson was previously an Endeavour Scholar, and an UWA Postgraduate Award holder for his doctoral study at the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, UWA. His doctoral dissertation looked at the use of Web data for automatically acquiring knowledge from natural language texts across different domains. The ability to provide abstractions of texts in the form of important concepts and their relations is a key asset, not only for bootstrapping the Semantic Web, but also for relieving us from the pressure of information overload. Wilson also has a BIT (First Class Honours) (Data Communications) degree, and an MSc (Information and Communication Technology) by research degree in the field of computational linguistics from Malaysia.

Wilson has over 20 publications in book chapters, reputable conferences (e.g. IJCNLP, IJCAI, PACLING) and high-impact journals (e.g. DMKD, IDA). Wilson has an H-Index of 6. He is currently editing a book, to be published by IGI global, entitled "Ontology Learning and Knowledge Discovery Using the Web: Challenges and Recent Advances". He is an invited participant in the Emerging Leaders' Dialogue on the future of knowledge economy in the Asia-Pacific region, sponsored by Peking University, Griffith University and Queensland Government. Wilson is a multiple scholarship recipient, and has experience in producing award-winning research, developing new undergraduate courses, supervising undergraduate projects, and organising international conferences. He also serves as a reviewer in several local and regional conferences. A more comprehensive CV which outlines my educational background, employment history, and research track record is available upon request. Please write to wilson@csse.uwa.edu.au.

Research Interest
My current research interests are centered around text mining, ontology learning and computational linguistics. More specifically, my areas of expertise include noisy text analytics, natural language processing, term recognition, word association measures, data clustering, semantic relation discovery, and development of Web 2.0 applications. My current research progress can be viewed at explorer.csse.uwa.edu.au/research/.
Technical Skill
My knowledge and skills in a wide range of programming languages and web technologies range between intermediate and expert. I was exposed to the basics of data communications, and computer programming during my B.IT. (HONS) studies in Multimedia University (MMU), Malaysia.
  • I am an expert in C/C++, Java, Prolog, HTML, PHP, CSS, XML, DHTML and JavaScript.
  • I also had experience with TCP/IP programming, OpenGL programming, encryption and cryptography, database management systems (e.g. IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server) during this period.
  • I scored grade A or A+ for all undergraduate units involving these technologies.
My skills with programming and web technologies were of continuous relevance to my research, teaching and community service.
  • M.Sc. by Research: My knowledge with database systems and programming languages was put to the test when I joined Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Malaysia and commenced my Master's research. I developed an award-winning system for question answering using MySQL database, PHP, other common markup and style sheet languages (e.g. HTML and CSS), and JavaScript.
  • Lecturing: At UTeM, I taught units such as Data Structures and Algorithms and Web Application Development where I impart my knowledge and skills in C/C++, PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript to my students. During this period, I successfully completed Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Stage 1 & 2 Courses to reinforce my knowledge and skills on networking protocols (e.g. OSI, TCP/IP), IP addressing and network cabling.
  • Community Service: I am also the volunteer webmaster for the Malaysian Parkinson’s Disease Association and the Amnesty International Western Australia branch websites. I maintain these websites using common markup and style sheet languages, JavaScript and PHP.
  • Ph.D. Research: My interest in Perl and Java grew further as I began my PhD research into text mining and ontology learning at the University of Western Australia (UWA), Australia. I developed a suite of text mining modules with about 90,000 lines of properly documented Perl codes for my thesis. As such, I am also an expert in Perl and Ajax programming. Online interfaces to these modules are available via explorer.csse.uwa.edu.au/research/.
